What is a normal day in a kaiapuni school?
Although each school is unique, a normal day at a kaiapuni school usually begins with oli (chanting) at the piko by the students and teachers. Hawaiian is spoken and heard throughout the campus. The kind of instruction depends on the grade level, but all instruction is done through Hawaiian. All content area are taught in Hawaiian in grades kindergarten to fourth grade. English instruction begins in fifth grade for one hour a day. Hawaiian is the foremost goal of the program. At some schools, everyone speaks Hawaiian, from the students, teachers, administrator and including the support staff. While most kaiapuni schools are housed within regular English schools, so English heard on the campus.

Do I need to pay a tuition for my keiki to attend Kula Kaiapuni?
All kaiapuni schools are Hawaiʻi Department of Education schools and charter schools, there is no tuition to attend any school.

I don't speak Hawaiian, is speaking Hawaiian a requirement to enroll my keiki in Kula Kaiapuni?
Speaking Hawaiian is not a requirement in order to enroll your keiki in a kula kaiapuni, but ʻohana (families) are encouraged to learn Hawaiian in order to support their keiki in their education. By learning Hawaiian, that is how our language and culture will endure and be perpetuated for generations to come.
